STUDENT GOVERNMENT June 3, 2002 Dear AUKers, It is my pleasure to address you on behalf of the AUK Student Government. The Student Government is an elected body to advocate student interests and foster the school spirit along with endeavors to solve campus-related issues. Currently, we are working on reorganizing the Student Government structure. Whereas, previously as designed by the Student Government of the 2000-2001 academic year, there have been two separate chambers: General Council and Departmental Representatives. Having worked for half a year with this structure we decided to reorganize it as it turned out somewhat cumbersome with complicated decision-making process. We propose to have one single chamber divided into four or five committees, which will deal with specific directions of our activities, like Finance Committee, Special Events Committee, etc. We believe it will be more efficient and structured than the previous one. AUK is a truly special place both to study and enjoy student life. You might often hear statements like this, and in our turn - we, student representatives, are trying to reinforce this statement by our activities directed to the betterment of students' life at AUK. The Student Government's primary goal and duty as of an elected and accountable body, is to protect students' interests by creating welfare activities to facilitate the studying process. Together with two Student Representatives in the Academic Senate and the two Student Affairs Coordinators, we are working on creating viable and autonomous student governance at AUK. So far, we have been attempting to impact the overall student welfare at AUK through different initiatives and we have to admit that we have had both failures and successes. However, you should know that alone the Student Government will not be able to solve any of our common student issues. Therefore a close cooperation is a must for to make the AUK Student Government function efficiently. We have to fight the apathy and indifference lately observed at AUK. There have been frequent talks about waning AUK spirit. We should keep in mind that it is the very AUK spirit that created our image of a unique institution with active and determined students. Therefore, all our efforts are directed at reviving this image. We have to turn the Student Government to become a vital part of AUK and foster the AUK spirit. Thus, it is in our common interests to see that the Student Government lives up to its expectations. Student Senators' Contacts Here |
