STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE

The SAO is the center of student life at AUK and the home of AUK's Student Senate and student newspaper, The Star. The goal of the SAO is to enhance the value of what students learn in the classroom and to contribute to the purposeful use of student's time by supporting interaction between students, professors, and those outside the university. Those interested in planning student activities, organizing a new student club, or joining an existing one can come to the SAO for materials and information. With advance notice, and depending on space availability, student clubs can also hold their meetings in the SAO.

Resources available at the SAO are:

  • computers for use by student organizations
  • paper, markers, tape, scissors and other materials needed by student organizationsa
  • phone to make calls associated with student activities
  • space for storing student club files and materials
  • space for meetings



STUDENTS HEALTH

Room 104 of the New Building houses the university's doctor. The doctor can provide medication for minor ailments such as headaches, colds, stomach aches, diarrhea, cuts and bruises. The doctor can also refer students to the proper specialist in cases of more serious problems. The center also arranges periodic consultations with medical specialists who come to the university.

LIBRARY

In 1993 the AUK' predecessor Kyrgyz American School opened a library with only several books and a small reading hall. Today AUK students have access to one of the largest collections of foreign language books and periodicals in Kyrgyzstan. The two University Library's halls are open seven days a week for more hours than any other library in the country. It has over 43,000 volumes in 14 world languages in its collection and 400 to 800 new titles are added every year. OFFICE OF CAREER SERVICES (OCS)

 

Ruslan Ykhtanigov - Career Office  coordinatorFinding a job is one of the most challenging tasks students face. However, as an AUK student, you do have an advantage. AUK has recently developed an Office of Career Services, which will provide resources that will make your job search much easier. OCS is currently housed in the Student Affairs Office. The staff consists of the student affairs coordinator and one part time career services coordinator. Throughout the year, OCS will hold seminars on job-searching skills, including resume - writing, interviewing, and how to conduct research for a job search. Keep an eye out for announcements for these seminars, as they will be an invaluable aid in developing the skills needed to search for employment. OSC holds consultations on resumes and cover letters - if you are considering applying for a job, come to the OCS for comments on how to you can improve these documents. The OCS also maintains contacts with businesses around the area, and can supply phone numbers and contact details.

During the school year OCS will maintain a bulletin board outside the Student Affairs Office to post current job vacancies. Please make sure to check this bulletin board frequently for information.

 


ORIENTATION WEEK

A first-term student registered at AUK is required to attend a special pre-registration orientation session. The program is specifically designed to help students successfully adjust to college life, and to utilize the various university resources for maximum personal development and benefit.




INITIATION

Every year, on the second Wednesday in November, freshmen participate in a show during which they are officially inducted into the university as students, and are awarded their student IDs. Planning for the show starts early and tryouts take place towards the end of September.
