REGULATIONS ON ADMISSION AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF STUDENTS Mission Statement The AUK Admission and Financial Aid office provides services with a personal touch for all students and their families. The Office is determined to provide friendly, effective, and professional services. We seek to provide students with general information on AUK academic programs and financial aid provision in Russian, Kyrgyz and English. The Office also provides interested applicants an opportunity to tour the campus, experience the AUK environment, obtain general scholarship information, and meet with faculty and department heads. 1. General Admission 1.1 Pursuant to the law of the Kyrgyz Republic "On Education" only students with high school degrees or vocational certificates are eligible for admission exams. 1.2 Citizens of all countries are welcome to apply. 1.3 All students are required to provide proof of high school graduation or its equivalent and transcripts. 1.4 Upon acceptance, the Admission Committee will present the applicant with an agreement regarding the terms of education, mutual responsibilities in maintaining academic standards, and all financial terms of tuition payment. Procedure of Registration and Enrolment 1.5 The American University in Kyrgyzstan offers equal educational opportunity regardless of race, religion, sex, color, national origin, or disability. 1.6 AUK encourages any applicant who feels that he or she may benefit from the educational opportunities offered by the university. 1.7 Consideration for admission is based upon the following: m Completion of AUK admission form. m Entrance Examination scores. m High School grades (transcripts, medals). m Previous grades from any college attended. m TOEFL score m Other special talents and /or special circumstances, which may affect the applicant's performance. m Completion of Essay. m Evidence of Personal Qualities, which will benefit the AUK community. Applicants outside of the Kyrgyz Republic may send admission materials by fax or E-mail. 1.8 The Admission period starts annually on June 1; entrance exams are usually scheduled in early July. Please note that there is 300 som fee for processing. 1.9 Entrance exams are administered in written and/or through oral interviews. 2. Transfer Students 2.1 It is preferred that a transfer student seeking admission enrolls in the fall semester. 2.2 All transfer applicants are required to submit a regular AUK admission application. 2.3 All transfer applicants must provide documents certifying their citizenship. The transcript from his previous institution, medical certificate, and required number of photo, essay where he/she describes himself and explains why he/she wants to study at AUK must be attached to the application. 2.4 Transfer students are encouraged to meet with appropriate department heads and faculty to discuss the courses and transfer credits. 2.5 Head of the programs determine to what year the student can be admitted after the admission exams. 2.6 Transfer might only be completed after the students finish their 1st year in their previous institution. 2.7 It is not permitted to transfer to AUK as a forth year student. 2.8 A TOEFL score of at least 500 is required. 2.9 Transfer students are required to take departmental examinations. 2.10 Transfer students have to provide transcripts from their previous undergraduate institution. 3. Preparatory Program 3.1 The American University in Kyrgyzstan welcomes all interested students who wish to study Intensive English, Russian, Mathematics and possibly elective courses in Preparatory Program. 3.2 Students are admitted to the Preparatory Program with State certificates from high school or vocational education. 3.3 All applicants are required to submit a regular AUK admission application. The high school or vocational certificate (for foreign students this document must be translated into English or Russian and certified by a notary), medical certificate, and required number of photos must be attached to the Application 3.4 AUK does not provide financial support to the students of the Preparatory Program. 3.5 Completion of the Preparatory Program does not guarantee a student's admission into an undergraduate program. Admission of Preparatory Students is made on the basis of general competition. However, outstanding performance in the Preparatory Program will be considered during the admission process. 4. Financial Support of the Student The American University in Kyrgyzstan provides limited financial assistance for students in the form of Scholarships. The distribution of Scholarships is based on the following: m Excellent admission examination scores; m Superior Academic Progress throughout the Academic Year (GPA not less than 3.2); m Financial Need of family (supported by the submitted documents and tax declaration on the incomes); m Leadership Qualities and participation in the AUK community life. All scholarship recipients are expected to submit their portion of fees. The minimum student contribution is generally as follows: Freshmen 200 $ Sophomore 200 $ Juniors 300 $ Seniors 400 $ However, full Scholarship awards are given for extraordinary students (one student from each class except Freshmen) despite their financial position. Scholarship applicants are required to submit a completed AUK Scholarship Application form and provide all supporting financial documents requested by the Scholarship Board. Any misrepresentation or omission may be the cause for denying financial assistance or expulsion from AUK. Receipt of a scholarship does not guarantee an award the following academic year. A student's failure to maintain high academic standards or failure to fulfill the tuition contract and/or adhere to the Code of Students Conduct is ground for loss of scholarship. Financial aid application deadline for students of 2-4 years are published annually. The applications from new students, transferring students, and students, who have come back after an academic leave, are accepted annually beginning June 1. Scholarships are not provided to students who transfer to AUK in the spring semester. As one of the forms of financial support for students for partial payment of tuition University provides an opportunity to work on the AUK campus.
