The library of the American University in Kyrgyzstan

In 1993 the AUK' predecessor Kyrgyz American School opened a library with only several books and a small reading hall. Today AUK students have access to one of the largest collections of foreign language books and periodicals in Kyrgyzstan. The two University Library's halls are open seven days a week for more hours than any other library in the country. It has over 43,000 volumes in 14 world languages in its collections and 400 to 800 new titles are added every year. There are almost 70 domestic and foreign periodicals and journals that allow students to be very well informed of what is happening throughout the world. Since January 1996, the library has been using the Winnebago library computer database system, which allows students to quickly find information they need and check out library materials. There are five qualified specialists to assist students with their needs.

The mission of AUK's library:

• informational support of the Auk's studying process and research activity
• efficient servicing of library users
• providing and maintenance of free access to different information with the usage of modern technologies
• provide students with access to information using the latest technologies

Auk's students must agree to the following when using the library:

• not to make marks in their books and return library items on time
• follow correct library registration process, i.e. give their library IDs to register literature
• assume responsibility for the items they check out: should any item be damaged or stolen, the students will be required to pay for the replacement of the item

* During exam period, the library remains open until midnight on weekdays.
